Elderly Couple Killed in Hathras House Fire, Short Circuit Suspected

In the early hours of Thursday, a fire engulfed a house in Mohalla Kahran, within the Sadabad police station limits of Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh. The blaze, believed to have been caused by a short circuit, killed 65‑year‑old Sahjad and his 62‑year‑old wife Salma, who were asleep and unable to escape. The house also housed a clothes shop, and a stockpile of clothes ahead of Diwali may have worsened the fire. Neighbours noticed the flames and smoke and alerted police and the fire brigade. Hathras Superintendent of Police Chiranjeev Nath Sinha said fire tenders were called and the fire was doused after nearly two hours of effort with the help of locals, police and a State Disaster Response Force team. The bodies were sent for post‑mortem and legal compliance. The couple lived with one of their four sons’ families, but the others were not present at the time of the incident. The police have identified the cause as a prima facie short circuit.
