Devang Vyas Resigns as Additional Solicitor General of Bombay and Gujarat High Courts

Devang Vyas has also represented central agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA) while opposing the bail applications of the accused in the Elgar Perished case

The Additional Solicitor General of Maharashtra and Gujarat, Devang Girish Vyas, submitted his resignation to the Law Minister on Tuesday. Vyas resigned from the post for both the states.

Speaking exclusively to India Today TV, Vyas said, “I received a lot of affection and respect from the bar as well as the bench. I leave as a very satisfied man. I am just leaving the post, but I will continue to work as an advocate.”

Vyas, 48, is based in Mumbai and has served as the Additional Solicitor General for 12 years.

He served as the Additional Solicitor General for the Gujarat High Court and assumed charge as the top government official for the Bombay High Court as well for six months in July 2023.

The legal affairs department’s order had stated that Vyas’ assignment was to be till the appointment of a regular Additional Solicitor General for Bombay High Court.

However, the period kept getting extended while Vyas juggled between various benches of both high courts. Vyas was conferred the designation of “senior advocate” in January 2022 by Gujarat High Court.

Vyas had taken over the office of Additional Solicitor General from Anil Singh, who had served as the additional solicitor general for nine years and represented the state in the Bombay High Court when the Maha Vikas Aghadi government was in power.

Vyas has also represented the central agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA) while opposing the bail applications of the accused in the Elgar Parishad case.

There were occasions when the bench of the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court requested his assistance, including in the case of overcrowded Mumbai local trains, which killed several people.
