NHAI to Relocate Nallur Toll Plaza to Durainallur, 13 km Away

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced plans to move the toll plaza currently located at Nallur on the Chennai‑Kolkata National Highway to Durainallur, about 13 kilometres from its present site. The Nallur plaza is known for long queues during peak hours, causing frustration among motorists. Residents of nearby areas such as Karanodai, Janapanchathiram, Nallur and Periyapalayam, as well as students and bus operators, have long requested its relocation. K. Suresh Kumar, a local resident, said the move would be very convenient for the community. Another resident, Ramesh, suggested that the road width be reduced and shops regularised to ease traffic. NHAI officials explained that the current location is no longer viable because new roads around the plaza allow drivers to bypass it, resulting in revenue loss. The plaza also falls within municipal limits, making relocation outside the limits appropriate. The contract with the current managing agency ends in May next year, and the agency hopes to have the new plaza design ready by then. Approximately 50,000 passenger cars use the road daily, and the new plaza is expected to operate as a multi‑lane free‑flow tolling system without booths or operators.
