CNN projects that Democrats will take control of both the House and Senate in the midterm elections. The projections come after a series of Democratic victories, including Abdul El‑Sayed’s win in Michigan’s Senate race, which would make him the first Muslim senator in U.S. history. El‑Sayed is projected to defeat former Republican Representative Mike Rogers. Democrats also flipped seven other Senate seats—in Ohio, Iowa, South Carolina, Maine, North Carolina, Kansas and Texas—while retaining seats in New Hampshire, Georgia, Michigan and Minnesota. Republican Senator Pete Ricketts is projected to win Nebraska’s Senate race, and Republican Governor Phil Scott is projected to win a sixth term in Vermont. In Arizona, Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs is projected to win reelection. President Donald Trump said he will accept the election results and is willing to work with Democrats, but he does not view the Republican losses as a rebuke of his presidency. Trump also said he does not see the losses as a hit on him and added that he was looking forward to working with the Democrats. The projections also include outcomes for other state and local races, such as the Idaho abortion proposition, which voters rejected, and the Minnesota Senate race, where Peggy Flanagan is projected to win. CNN’s Decision Desk and other reporters contributed to the coverage of the election night.
