A strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted Assam and several parts of Northeast India in the early hours of the morning, sending residents into panic.
The tremor struck at 4:17 am, with its epicentre located near Morigaon district in central Assam, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the government agency responsible for monitoring seismic activity in India.
The NCS said the earthquake originated at a depth of 50 kilometres, a factor that likely reduced surface-level damage. However, the shaking was widely felt across Morigaon and surrounding districts, with many residents rushing outdoors as buildings trembled.
The situation was made more distressing by cold weather and dense fog, which prevailed at the time of the quake, leaving people disoriented as they gathered outside their homes.

Seismologists noted that the epicentre falls along the Kopili fault line, a geologically active zone that has been responsible for several earthquakes in the region over the years.
As of now, no reports of casualties or damage to property have been received, providing some relief amid concerns.Northeast India, including Assam, lies in one of the most seismically sensitive zones in the country, making frequent tremors a known but worrying reality for residents.
