CJP Chalo Sansad Protest Turns Tense Near Parliament Amid Tear Gas and Heavy Security

Thousands of supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20, 2026, for the “Chalo Sansad” campaign, turning the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session into a tense political confrontation over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and demands for examination reforms. Delhi Police had said that permission was not granted for a march towards Parliament, while prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were in force across New Delhi. Police, Rapid Action Force personnel and other security units were deployed around Parliament Street, Shastri Bhawan and key intersections as groups of protesters attempted to advance beyond the designated demonstration area. Reports said tear-gas shells were fired near Shastri Bhawan after some demonstrators allegedly tried to breach barricades, while protesters near Parliament Street were baton-charged and several were reportedly detained. Delhi Police, however, disputed online claims of violence and detentions and described some of the reports circulating about its handling of the demonstration as misleading. Security restrictions also affected public transport, with gates at Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth Metro stations temporarily closed before some services were restored. Opposition leaders, including Aam Aadmi Party representatives, joined the gathering, while Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the alleged police action during parliamentary proceedings. Amid the confrontation, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke ended his hunger strike at the request of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital following a prolonged fast. CJP representatives Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were subsequently sent for discussions with senior Union minister J.P. Nadda after the government initiated contact. The party said it remained willing to participate in dialogue but wanted a clear and formal response to its concerns. The protest has intensified national debate over examination integrity, student accountability and the balance between the right to demonstrate and security restrictions around Parliament.
