India is stepping up its clean fuel strategy by introducing E85 petrol at a ₹20 per litre discount compared to E20 fuel, aiming to encourage wider use of ethanol-blended alternatives. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the move while launching an E85 dispensing facility in Delhi. E85 contains 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, making it a major part of India’s plan to cut fossil fuel dependence, lower emissions, and support domestic biofuel production. The discounted pricing is expected to make E85 more attractive for flex-fuel vehicle users, although experts note that ethanol has lower energy content than petrol, which may affect mileage. State-run oil marketing companies will lead the rollout of discounted E85 fuel across India as availability of compatible vehicles and fuel stations expands.
