Heatwave Safety Tips: Doctor Shares Golden Rules to Prevent Heat Exhaustion

Date:

As heatwaves continue to intensify across India, health experts are urging people to take extra precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Doctors emphasize that extreme heat can lead to conditions like dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heatstroke if not managed properly. With temperatures rising significantly in many regions, following simple but effective safety measures can make a crucial difference in staying healthy during the summer months.

One of the most important rules is to stay well-hydrated throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Drinking water regularly, along with fluids like coconut water and oral rehydration solutions, helps maintain the body’s electrolyte balance. Experts also recommend avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, typically between late morning and early afternoon, when temperatures are at their highest. Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing and using protective accessories like hats or umbrellas can further reduce the risk of overheating.

In addition to hydration and sun protection, maintaining a cool indoor environment is equally important. Using fans, coolers, or air conditioning, along with taking frequent breaks if working outdoors, can help regulate body temperature. Doctors also advise paying close attention to early warning signs such as dizziness, fatigue, excessive sweating, or nausea, as these may indicate heat exhaustion. Acting quickly by moving to a cooler place and rehydrating can prevent the condition from worsening. By following these “golden rules,” individuals can significantly reduce health risks and stay safe during extreme heat conditions.
