Three children aged 7, 8 and 10 from Meppayil Senior Basic School in Kozhikode, Kerala, were admitted to the Government District Hospital with vomiting, fever and diarrhoea. Blood tests now show all three are positive for shigellosis, after initial negative results. The children had begun to fall ill after eating egg curry and curd at school lunch. Since last Friday, 104 people have reported similar symptoms and sought treatment at private hospitals and the Government District Hospital. Health and education teams, led by the District Medical Officer, inspected the school. Health workers visited 950 homes to distribute oral rehydration salts, and wells at 290 properties were chlorinated. Published – November 07, 2026 10:00 am IST
