U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by telephone with Qatar’s Emir Sheik Tamim bin Hamad al Thani about efforts to reduce tensions in West Asia, as the region remains wary of possible renewed U.S. military action against Iran. The call, according to a statement from the Qatari ruler’s media office, focused on international initiatives to end the crisis. The two leaders discussed Qatar’s mediation work aimed at achieving a comprehensive agreement that would end the crisis and secure stability in the region. Qatar has been mediating between the United States and Iran to end the war. Qatar and other U.S.-allied Gulf Arab countries had earlier been subjected to heavy fire from Iran during the U.S.–Iran war and have been keen to avoid a new escalation that could expose them to attacks. During the conversation, Sheik Tamim emphasized the need to continue dialogue and use diplomatic means to resolve disputes, to spare the region further escalation, and to ensure freedom of maritime navigation and the security of energy supplies.
