German ministers warned of harsh penalties for looters and rioters who damaged 17 shops and stores, five of which were looted, and injured more than 100 police officers during overnight protests in Frankfurt. The city became a flashpoint after tens of thousands of demonstrators marched across Germany on October 31, 2026, demanding better education and lower living costs under the campaign group “Gen Z regelt.” Interior Minister Roman Poseck of Hesse said police deployed 1,300 officers, arrested 54 people aged 13 to 29, and estimated 1,000 to 1,500 violent troublemakers, mostly of migrant background. He described the violence as shocking and warned that it could not continue. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told the Bild tabloid that the rioters and looters would be identified and held accountable, calling for tough penalties. He blamed “violent left‑wing groups and troublemakers from the migrant community” for hijacking the otherwise peaceful protests and praised the police strategy of maintaining a large presence across multiple locations, which he said prevented excesses similar to those in Paris. In France, protests continued largely peacefully for a third weekend after extensive riots and looting on October 17 damaged shops, public buildings and businesses.
