Tirupati Faces Heavy Rainfall and Forecasted Storms

Tirupati and much of the district received 49.8 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am Sunday, according to an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) report. The showers, driven by a depression over the east‑central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, caused intermittent rain that disrupted daily life and produced water‑logging in some areas. Surface winds and falling temperatures added to the discomfort, leading many residents, especially senior citizens, to stay indoors.
The rain also affected Tirumala, where devotees visiting the Sri Venkateswara temple experienced inconvenience. Mist and cooler conditions on the hills, combined with the downpour, hindered movement around the temple’s surroundings and the mada streets. Pilgrims who had finished their darshan struggled to reach accommodations, bus stands and other destinations, often scrambling for shelter.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) advised motorists on the ghat roads to drive slowly and exercise caution, particularly where rain and fog reduce visibility. Devotees were also urged to take precautions while moving around open areas during the rainy weather.
The IMD warned that the weather system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday and move toward the Andhra Pradesh coast. It forecast further spells of rain and thunderstorms in Tirupati and other parts of Rayalaseema over the next few days, with rainfall activity expected to increase on Tuesday and Wednesday.
