Visakhapatnam Prepares for Heavy Rainfall Until Oct. 29

The Visakhapatnam district administration has placed the area on high alert in anticipation of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected to continue until October 29. District Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore has instructed all departments to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to reduce risks to life and property. Winds are forecast to reach 70–80 km/h, with gusts up to 90 km/h, under a low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

The Collector ordered officials to coordinate preparedness and ensure that rescue, relief and rehabilitation teams are ready for emergencies. Police, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), revenue, electricity, health, transport, Panchayat Raj and water resources departments have been directed to work closely together. They are to identify risks in hilly areas, low‑lying localities, villages and residential zones that are vulnerable to heavy rainfall and be ready to evacuate residents to safer locations where necessary.

Relief centres in flood‑prone areas must be prepared with adequate drinking water, sanitation and toilet facilities. Electricity department staff and equipment should be available to address possible power disruptions. The Collector also instructed that JCBs and other machinery be ready to clear fallen trees that may block roads during heavy rain and strong winds.

Fisheries Department officials have been directed to warn fishermen against venturing into the sea during the adverse weather and to ensure that boats and fishing nets are moved to safe locations.

Residents are advised to remain alert, follow official instructions and contact the relevant helplines in case of an emergency. Medical teams, emergency medicines and ambulances are to be kept ready, and special medical camps should be arranged where needed to address weather‑related emergencies.

The Collector has directed all department staff to remain at their respective headquarters, cancelling previously sanctioned leave as part of precautionary measures. No leave will be granted without permission until further orders. Round‑the‑clock command and control rooms have been established at the Collectorate, GVMC and field‑level offices to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency responses.

The district administration stresses the need for effective precautionary, rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures to prevent loss of life and property. Residents can contact the district helplines for emergency assistance and information.
