Goyal Urges Global Reach for Indian Art, Cites Prada Kolhapuri Case
By Sana Fazili

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal urged Indian entrepreneurs to expand beyond domestic markets and highlighted the need for greater international exposure for Indian art and culture. Speaking at an event in Delhi on Friday, Goyal referenced the controversy over Prada’s use of Kolhapuri‑style footwear last year. He said that after the ministry raised an objection through the copyright office, Prada was forced to engage with Kolhapuri shoemakers, resulting in a commercial agreement that benefits local artisans. Goyal added that India’s global presence is still limited and that a broader international platform for handicrafts, handlooms, history and traditions would benefit the country.
In June 2025, Prada faced backlash and legal challenges for cultural appropriation after showcasing open‑toe leather sandals resembling traditional Kolhapuri chappals at a Milan fashion show. Kolhapuri chappals hold a 2019 Geographical Indication tag. Prada later signed agreements with government‑backed leather artisan bodies, Maharashtra’s LIDCOM and Karnataka’s LIDKAR.
Goyal also urged young entrepreneurs to look beyond the domestic market and build globally competitive businesses. He cited India’s expanding startup ecosystem, manufacturing capabilities, free trade agreements and deeper integration with global value chains as opportunities for young businesses to expand internationally and generate employment. In a social media post, he said, “India’s next phase of economic transformation must be driven by young entrepreneurs who look beyond the domestic market and aspire to build world‑class brands.” He emphasized maintaining globally competitive quality standards, developing industry‑relevant skills and adopting an export‑oriented approach, encouraging calculated risks and international competitiveness.
