Qatari Delegation Arrives in Tehran to Discuss Ceasefire with U.S. and Iran

Qatari mediators arrived in Tehran on Friday morning to negotiate a revival of a ceasefire in the U.S.–Iran conflict. The delegation, led by senior adviser Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, worked with U.S. officials and delivered a letter from Vice President J.D. Vance to Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei. The letter, delivered on Sunday, proposes a new diplomatic process and a framework for negotiations, but does not contain specific peace terms. Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported the arrival, while Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar noted that the letter’s tone was more respectful than previous U.S. correspondence, a development welcomed by Iranian authorities. Sources say a meeting could take place within a week, either in Doha or Istanbul. The diplomatic effort comes amid conflicting signals from Washington, including President Donald Trump’s warning to Gulf allies about a possible brief high‑intensity military campaign after the U.S. midterm elections. The Qatari delegation is expected to receive Iran’s response and discuss a potential new diplomatic path.
