A fresh political controversy has erupted in Assam after senior Congress leader Bhupen Borah’s reported exit triggered sharp exchanges between the ruling BJP and the opposition.
The Congress downplayed Borah’s departure, stating that the party remains united and focused on strengthening its organisational structure ahead of upcoming political battles. However, the situation escalated when Congress leaders accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of allegedly leaking confidential internal communications to create instability within the party.
In a strongly worded statement, Congress leaders referred to Sarma as “Assam’s Jinnah,” a remark aimed at portraying him as someone attempting to divide political forces in the state. The comment has intensified political rhetoric, with BJP leaders calling it irresponsible and inflammatory.
The Congress alleged that sensitive internal discussions were being selectively exposed in the public domain, claiming this was a deliberate attempt to damage the party’s credibility. BJP leaders, on the other hand, dismissed the accusations, asserting that Congress was struggling with internal dissent and trying to deflect attention.

Bhupen Borah’s reported exit has become a focal point in Assam’s political landscape, especially as parties begin preparing for future elections. While Congress insists the party structure remains intact, political observers believe the episode reflects deeper churn within the state’s opposition camp.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma has not directly responded to the “Jinnah” remark but has continued to target the Congress leadership over governance and organisational issues.
The political exchange signals that Assam’s political temperature is rising well ahead of the next major electoral cycle, with both sides sharpening their narratives.
