As the December 31, 2025 deadline approaches, taxpayers across India are urged to link their PAN with Aadhaar before January 1, 2026. If this crucial step is not completed by the deadline, your PAN will become inoperative, blocking your ability to handle essential financial tasks and file tax returns.
Why Linking PAN with Aadhaar Is Crucial
Failing to link your Aadhaar with PAN can cause significant disruptions, including:
- Inability to file Income Tax Returns (ITR)
- Restricted bank account operations and high-value transactions
- Blocking of investments in mutual funds, stocks, bonds, and insurance
- Difficulty applying for personal and home loans, or securing low-interest loans
- Increased TDS rates if your PAN is inoperative
Penalty for Missing the Deadline
If you miss the December 31, 2025 deadline, you will need to pay a ₹1,000 penalty through the Income Tax e-Pay facility in order to reactivate your PAN and complete the linking process.
Abhishek Soni, CEO & Co-founder of Tax2win, emphasized: “You must link your Aadhaar with PAN by December 31, 2025, to keep your PAN card active. If you miss this deadline, your PAN will become inoperative from January 1, 2026, which will block income-tax filing, refunds, and other financial services. A late fee of ₹1,000 will be required to reactivate and link your PAN.”

What to Do if Your Details Don’t Match
If you cannot link PAN and Aadhaar due to mismatched details, such as name, date of birth, or phone number, follow these steps:
- Update PAN Details through Protean or UTIITSL.
- Update Aadhaar Details via UIDAI or by emailing the UIDAI Helpdesk at authsupport@uidai.net.in.
- If the linking still fails, biometric authentication can be done at authorized PAN Service Provider centres. Bring your PAN, Aadhaar, and a ₹1,000 fee for verification.
Step-by-Step Online Linking Process
- Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal and click on “Link Aadhaar”.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers.
- Verify details using the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- If linking after the deadline, pay ₹1,000 via e-Pay Tax, then re-enter your details for validation.
Check Your Linking Status

You can check the status of your Aadhaar-PAN linking on the portal:

Final Reminder
With the deadline fast approaching, it’s critical to verify your details and link your PAN with Aadhaar as soon as possible to avoid penalties and potential financial complications.
