Ather Energy will launch a mass-market electric scooter built on an all-new scooter platform at its Ather Community Day event on August 29, marking the company’s entry into the affordable electric two-wheeler segment. The announcement was made by the company’s co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta in a post on social media.
Mehta said the new scooter marks the culmination of years of investment in technologies and architectures aimed at improving electric two-wheelers for mainstream customers. “This 29th August, at Ather Community Day, we’ll be launching our mass-market scooter built on our brand new scooter platform,” he wrote.
According to the post, Ather believes the electric two-wheeler market has moved beyond the early adopter phase, with technologies and features now ready for mass-market adoption. The company said the next phase of EV adoption requires addressing a wider range of customer priorities, including resale value, servicing time, ride comfort, charging convenience, fast-charging capabilities, and vehicle safety.
The new scooter will be the first to use Ather’s modular EL platform, which is expected to underpin future products. The upcoming model is expected to help the company expand its presence in the affordable electric scooter segment and will introduce an all-new platform that will underpin future products.
While the company did not disclose additional specifications or pricing for the upcoming scooter in the post, industry reports suggest the new model will be priced between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it against competitors like the TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, Hero Vida VX2 and Ola S1 in the Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.15 lakh bracket, which is the highest-volume part of India’s electric scooter market.
The EL platform-based scooter is expected to be Ather’s most affordable offering yet, positioned below the Ather Rizta and 450 series. The company has confirmed the date and the platform but has not confirmed battery capacity, motor output, certified range, charging times or variant structure. Everything circulating about those numbers is speculation, and buyers should treat it as such until August 29.
Reports indicate that deliveries are expected to begin around the festive season of 2026, which typically means October onwards. The scooter is expected to feature a battery pack ranging from 2 kWh to 5 kWh, with a side-mounted motor and a 5-inch to 7-inch touchscreen display. ABS is also expected to be included as a standard safety feature.
Mehta said the August 29 event would feature “a bunch” of launches, suggesting additional products or services could be unveiled alongside the new scooter. “There’s a bunch to launch on 29th August. See you all there!” he added.
The fourth edition of Ather Community Day will be held on August 29 in Bengaluru under the theme ‘A New Dawn of Magic’. The event will showcase the first electric scooter based on the company’s new EL platform, marking its entry into the mass-market scooter segment.
The new scooter represents Ather’s strategy to expand beyond its premium positioning and tap into the larger volume segment of the Indian electric two-wheeler market. The company inaugurated its first experience centre in Salem under its move to expand retail footprint in Tamil Nadu, bringing its total to nine retail stores in the state.
Ather’s move into the mass-market segment comes at a time when competition in the affordable electric scooter space is intensifying. The company faces competition from established players like TVS, Bajaj, and Hero, as well as newer entrants like Ola Electric, all vying for a share of the rapidly growing electric two-wheeler market.
The EL platform is designed with scalability and manufacturing efficiency in mind, enabling the company to expand its addressable market and strengthen its future product portfolio. The modular architecture will allow Ather to develop multiple electric scooters on the same platform, reducing development costs and time-to-market for future models.
Industry analysts view Ather’s entry into the mass-market segment as a strategic move that could help the company achieve higher volumes and improve its overall market position. The affordable electric scooter segment accounts for the largest share of electric two-wheeler sales in India, making it a critical market for any manufacturer looking to establish a strong presence.
With the August 29 launch, Ather will join the growing list of manufacturers offering affordable electric scooters, providing consumers with more choices in the rapidly evolving EV market. The success of the new model will depend on its pricing, features, range, and the company’s ability to deliver on its promise of addressing key customer priorities in the mass-market segment.
