Samsung Display Unveils M16 OLED Stack for 2K 165Hz Smartphone Screens with 10,000-Nit Peak Brightness
By Ron Mertens
Samsung Display has introduced its newest M16 OLED material stack, which the company says enables the world's first 2K resolution smartphone AMOLED panel running at a 165Hz refresh rate. The first device to feature this M16-based 2K 165Hz display will be the upcoming Vivo iQOO 16 gaming smartphone.
According to Samsung Display, the M16 stack supports a peak brightness of up to 10,000 nits. Despite increasing the panel resolution from 1.5K to 2K, the company states it has cut power consumption by approximately 30% compared to its previous generation of smartphone AMOLED displays.
Samsung Display achieved this efficiency gain partly by increasing the thickness of the backplane wiring by 10%, which reduces electrical resistance and speeds up pixel charging. Additionally, the company moved to a 22-nanometer manufacturing process for the driving chip, an improvement over the previous 28-nanometer process, which further lowered the chip's operational power consumption by 30%.
