Spanish Mathematicians Say Their Year-Long Research Enabled OpenAI's AI Breakthrough on Historic Math Problem

Spanish mathematicians Diego Córdoba and Luis Martínez-Zoroa say their year of research provided the essential foundation for an artificial intelligence system to solve one of the most significant unsolved problems in mathematical history. The pair contrast their extended effort with OpenAI's process, which reportedly took 88 hours and cost €15 million to reach the solution using AI. According to Córdoba and Martínez-Zoroa, the AI would not have been able to solve the problem without the groundwork established by their prior work. Both researchers believe this achievement represents a turning point that will fundamentally transform the field of mathematics going forward.
