JNU Student Attacked Peer with Meat Cleaver, Resulting in Loss of Vision

A Jawaharlal Nehru University student, Ajay, allegedly attacked fellow student Saurabh with a meat cleaver over Saurabh’s friendship with a woman student. The assault occurred around 3 pm on November 5 in room 119 of the Barak Hostel. Saurabh, a second‑year language student, sustained severe injuries to his right eye, nose, face and shoulders, along with multiple fractures. He lost vision in his right eye and was treated at the AIIMS Trauma Centre until Saturday evening. Ajay, who is pursuing an MA at the university, also sustained injuries. Three other students were injured in the altercation, bringing the total number of injured students to four.

The woman friend of Saurabh filed a complaint with the Vasant Kunj North police station, leading to an FIR under sections including attempt to murder. No arrest had been made by Saturday evening. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goyal confirmed that an investigation was underway.

The Proctor’s Office ordered the rustication of the four students under Sections 32(1) and 32(3) of the JNU Act, 1966. The students were barred from the campus pending a proctorial inquiry, and the university warned of strict disciplinary action against anyone providing shelter to the expelled students. The university stated it has robust mechanisms for grievance redressal and follows a zero‑tolerance policy toward violence.
