Krakow Main Square Shooting Claims Five Lives, Dozens Injured

On Saturday, November 7, a gunman opened fire on pedestrians in Krakow’s historic Main Market Square, killing five people and injuring more than a dozen, including two police officers. Police reports say the attacker fired at random from a moving car before engaging in a gunfight with officers, who shot and wounded him. The suspect, wearing military‑style fatigues and carrying a long gun, was detained and taken to hospital. Police found additional weapons and ammunition in his vehicle and say he acted alone; no motive has been announced. A tram driver reported being shot at as the vehicle passed near the square, with the driver’s cabin window shattered. Emergency services, ambulances and a Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopter were dispatched to the scene. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the Interior Ministry was keeping him informed and that police were investigating all circumstances. President Karol Nawrocki expressed solidarity with victims and their families. U.S. Ambassador Tom Rose condemned the attack and said the United States stands with Poland and Krakow. Krakow, Poland’s second‑largest city, attracts about 15 million tourists annually, many of whom visit the Main Market Square.
