Tamil Nadu Expands Crop Loan Waiver, Extends Eligibility to March 31, 2026

The Tamil Nadu government has revised its crop loan waiver scheme, offering a ₹75,000 waiver to farmers who took loans exceeding ₹75,000 from cooperative institutions. Farmers who borrowed up to ₹75,000 will continue to receive a full waiver of the loan amount. Previously, the scheme allowed a maximum waiver of ₹75,000 for loans between ₹75,000 and ₹1 lakh, and a maximum waiver of ₹35,000 for loans above ₹1 lakh. The new order, issued by the Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection Department, extends the eligibility period by one month to include loans taken up to March 31 2026, up from the earlier window of May 1 2025 to February 28 2026. The state has sanctioned an additional ₹2,842.77 crore for the expanded scheme. Total expenditure on the revised waiver is estimated at ₹9,062.83 crore, of which ₹6,220.056 crore has already been released. Under the new scheme, 590,621 farmers with loans up to ₹75,000 will receive a full waiver, while 734,260 farmers with loans above ₹75,000 will be eligible for a flat ₹75,000 waiver. The government also extends the benefit to 10,810 farmers who had fully repaid their loans before the announcement. The revised order includes various interest‑related reimbursements for eligible farmers. Published – November 07 2026 02:49 pm IST
