Telangana Adds 359 New PG Medical Seats, Total Intake Reaches 1,625

Telangana has received approval to add 359 postgraduate (PG) medical seats in its government medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic year, raising the total number of government seats from 1,266 to 1,625. The expansion will allow students to pursue PG medical education in 13 government colleges that are receiving PG courses for the first time. As a result, 23 of the state’s 35 government medical colleges will offer postgraduate courses, up from 10 previously.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), through its Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), issued an updated PG broad speciality seat matrix on November 6, incorporating the new seats for 2026-27. The 13 colleges receiving PG seats for the first time are located in Nagarkurnool, Mahabubabad, Wanaparthy, Mancherial, Kamareddy, Rajanna Sircilla, Khammam, Karimnagar, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Jangaon, Nirmal, Sangareddy and Narsampet.

In addition to government seats, the state has received approval for 107 new PG seats at the Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, and 106 seats at the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College, Sanath Nagar.

Private medical colleges in Telangana account for approximately 2,600 PG seats, according to a state government press note. The NMC’s updated matrix lists 2,228 seats under the private category and 350 seats under the deemed university category, bringing the combined intake to 2,578.

The NMC’s November 6 public notice directed colleges and institutions granted permission to start new PG broad speciality courses or increase the intake of existing courses to submit the required electronic bank guarantees (e-BGs) within seven days. Letters of Permission‑cum‑Disapproval (LoP‑cum‑LoD) for newly approved courses and increased intake will be issued only after the NMC receives and verifies the bank guarantees. Colleges must provide the details in the prescribed format to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board.

The Commission has also instructed central and state counselling authorities to use the latest notified seat matrix for admissions. Colleges are required to admit students only up to the number of seats approved by the NMC. Admissions beyond the approved annual intake will constitute a regulatory violation and may attract action under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.
