Governor‑elect Hinojosa Calls for Pause on SpaceX Land Transfer Near Boca Chica

Governor‑elect Gina Hinojosa has asked the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to refrain from taking any action on a proposed transfer of about 1,300 acres of public land in Cameron County until she takes office on January 19, 2027. The land includes Boca Chica State Park, which lies adjacent to SpaceX’s Starbase launch site. Hinojosa told reporters that the area is an important resource and that she will keep it in mind as she prepares to govern. She also said she discussed the matter with the department’s executive director, who indicated that the issue was not on the commission’s current agenda. The proposed sale has drawn opposition from environmentalists concerned about the future of the area and access to Boca Chica Beach. While Texas officials had reportedly reviewed a draft agenda that included the transfer, the item was removed from the final agenda and no sale has been confirmed. Hinojosa emphasized that any future relationship with Elon Musk’s companies would be on Texas terms and that she would continue to monitor the situation after taking office. She has not yet announced a final decision on how her administration will handle a potential transfer of the land.
