Assam CM Warns of Threat to Family Over Zubeen Garg Case

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday, November 6, 2026, that a threat by a group led by an MLA to besiege his house over the Zubeen Garg death case posed a danger to his family. Speaking to journalists in Guwahati, he said he would bring the threat to the notice of the Supreme Court and the Gauhati High Court, as it could amount to an attempt to murder. The Zubeen Garg Nyay Samiti, headed by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, announced on Thursday, November 5, 2026, that it would surround the Chief Minister’s residence if Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, the two prime accused in the Garg death case, were granted bail. Garg died while swimming in the sea off an island in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Seven people, including Mahanta and Sharma, were arrested in connection with the death, which Singapore authorities said was accidental. However, the Chief Minister told the 126‑member Assembly on November 25, 2025, that Garg’s death was “plain and simple murder”. On Friday, November 7, 2026, he said what he stated in the Assembly was reflected in the charge sheet filed by the Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe Garg’s death. Referring to the bail granted by the Gauhati High Court to singer Amritprava Mahanta, also an accused in the Garg death case, on October 9, he pointed out that 160 witnesses named her during the SIT investigation but not during the hearing. “People should question the witnesses, not me. The court should be allowed to do its work,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the threat to besiege his residence was a “serious matter”. “The call to protest near the Chief Minister’s residence and not his office is a threat to my family and could amount to a direct attempt to murder,” he said, adding that he has instructed the legal department to bring the matter to the notice of the courts. “The threat, after creating an impression that two accused (Mahanta and Sharma) will be granted bail, is a conspiracy to create unrest in the State,” the Chief Minister said.
