VTU Launches On‑Demand Exams to Reduce Student Delays
By Jayanth R.

The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has announced a new on‑demand examination system to prevent students from losing an academic year when they miss scheduled semester exams or fail one or more subjects. Under the new system, exams can be scheduled at a time convenient to the student, even for a single enrollee, and may be held on public holidays. S. Vidyashankar, VTU’s Vice‑Chancellor, told The Hindu that the university has made all necessary preparations and will conduct exams for any student who requests them. Results for on‑demand exams will be released within 24 hours of the test. VTU has instructed all 220 affiliated engineering colleges to inform students about the opportunity. Details on eligibility, scheduling, and the application process will be announced soon. VTU is the first public university in the state to adopt this approach. The university serves about 300,000 students, with roughly 70,000 new admissions each year, and typically 20% of students fail one or more subjects each semester. Previously, such students had to wait six to seven months for a re‑exam. VTU will use artificial intelligence to generate question papers from its existing bank of 500–600 papers per subject and has deployed the required staff to conduct the exams.
