Bengaluru Consultant Repays ₹43 Lakh Education Loan with Son in Attendance

A consultant based in Bengaluru paid off a ₹43 lakh education loan that had been outstanding for more than eight years, bringing her son, who was three years old at the time, to the bank to witness the repayment. Arpitha Rao explained in a LinkedIn post that she wanted her son to see the "milestone" so he would understand the value of financial independence and be motivated to stand on his own feet. Rao recounted the difficulties she faced from college, noting that her father stopped providing financial support when she turned 18 and that she had become financially independent by 22. After her marriage and the birth of her child, a pay cut and the loss of six months’ maternity benefits from her startup left her with no income, a setback she described as the biggest hit. Despite these challenges, Rao continued to repay the loan, which had increased from ₹26 lakh to ₹43 lakh. She worked for impact consulting firms such as Sattva, Intellecap and Sagana, handling projects in education, gender, climate and energy transition. "Today, I am debt free," Rao said as she entered a new phase of professional and personal independence. She described taking her son to the bank as intentional, hoping he would grow up valuing earning, financial independence and the courage to build his own life. Rao added that her son’s highlight of the trip was touching the bank guard’s gun. The post attracted many comments online, with several people calling her journey inspirational and others sharing their own debt experiences.
