A Reuters/Ipsos poll released ahead of the U.S. midterm elections shows that only 32 percent of voters approve of President Donald Trump’s job performance, a slight increase of one percentage point from two weeks earlier. The poll also indicates that 46 percent of respondents would vote for a generic Democrat, compared with 38 percent who would vote for a generic Republican. Trump, who is not on the ballot, has urged his supporters to vote as if they are voting for him, warning that if the Republican Party loses control of Congress, Democrats could seek a third impeachment. Trump’s approval rating has been falling steadily, particularly since the U.S.-Israel war on Iran began on February 28, which has driven up fuel prices and raised concerns about inflation and the economy. The president has spent nearly a month campaigning for Republican candidates in an effort to keep control of the House and Senate. He concluded his campaign tour on Monday with a rally at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., where he spoke about his renovation plans for the capital, including a “Triumphal Arch” that is facing legal challenges. Trump acknowledged that his campaigning might not achieve the desired results for his party but said that midterm elections typically do not favor the sitting president. He added, “For some reason, the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms, but we gave this a very strong shot.”
