Israel’s Knesset Election Results Highlight Rising Nationalism and Electoral Fragmentation

Israel’s latest Knesset election, billed as a “consequential” event and a “day of reckoning for the October 7 Hamas attack,” produced a fragmented outcome that may disappoint many stakeholders. The country’s 7.3 million voters chose among 38 officially recognised parties, but only 11 are expected to surpass the 3.25 % threshold required to enter the 120‑seat legislature. The election uses proportional representation. The parties are currently grouped into three coalitions: the ruling extreme‑right bloc, the centrist bloc, and the Israeli‑Arab bloc, which secured 53, 48 and 19 seats respectively. The Israeli‑Arab bloc represents a 21 % minority that remains largely outside the influence of mainstream Jewish parties. Voter demographics are divided along ethnic and origin lines—occidental, oriental and orthodox groups. Since the 2022 elections, nearly half a million new voters have reached voting age, and turnout rose by almost ten percentage points to 77.7 %, indicating heightened political engagement.
