MHADA to Target Illegal Constructions in Redevelopment Zones Across Mumbai
By Ateeq Shaikh

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is preparing to launch a crackdown on unauthorized construction on its land in Mumbai, particularly in areas slated for redevelopment. The Encroachment Removal Department will carry out demolition drives in several locations, including Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar in Andheri West, Motilal Nagar and Siddharth Nagar in Goregaon West, Anand Nagar in Santacruz’s Vakola, Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli East, and Gorai and Charkop in Borivali West. The authority plans to initiate legal proceedings against developers and individuals who repeatedly engage in illegal building activities, under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. Criminal cases may also be registered where evidence warrants. The action is expected to begin after Diwali. The crackdown comes amid ongoing redevelopment plans for large housing clusters such as SVP Nagar, Motilal Nagar, Bandra Reclamation, and Adarsh Nagar, which have faced opposition from residents who argue the process is undemocratic and have taken legal challenges against MHADA’s decisions.
