12‑Year‑Old London Boy Raises £13,000 for Wildlife and Gains Sir David Attenborough’s Endorsement

By TOI World Desk

Leo Sordello‑Savala, a 12‑year‑old from Camberwell in south London, has built a conservation movement that has earned him national recognition and a handwritten letter from Sir David Attenborough. Leo began his project seven years ago, aiming to connect young animal lovers and take action on wildlife protection. The initiative, called Leo’s Animal Planet, now spans YouTube, podcasts and other social media, where he shares animal facts, educational videos and information on endangered species. His online following exceeds 35,000 people across platforms.

A fundraising drive linked to his content has raised more than £13,000 for animal charities and rewilding projects. Leo has donated profits from his online content, a sustainable clothing shop on Teemill, and prize money from awards such as the 2025 London Eco Champion Award. He has also sold old toys, books and clothes, hosted school events with cakes and badges, and participated in races to raise money for conservation. Leo works with the Cheetah Conservation Fund, the Captain Paul Watson Foundation UK and Born Free, where he serves as a young ambassador.

On 29 October, Leo received the BCyA Medal of Honor at the Palace of Westminster alongside other young people recognized for their achievements. He has also earned a British Citizen Youth Award for his positive contributions to his community and wider society.

In 2021, Sir David Attenborough sent Leo a handwritten letter acknowledging his work, a moment that boosted the young campaigner’s profile. Leo continues to use his platform to raise awareness of species and habitats that need protection, demonstrating that conservation can begin with a child, a camera and genuine interest in wildlife.
