On September 22, 2026, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland signed a security agreement at the United Nations. The pact expands American military presence in Greenland while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenland’s right to self‑determination. Greenland, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has extensive control over domestic affairs under the 2009 Self‑Government Act, but foreign, defence, and security policy remain with Denmark. The agreement is intended to end the tensions that had arisen after the Trump administration’s interest in gaining control of the island. The pact will enter into force once the necessary parliamentary procedures in Denmark and Greenland are completed. Published – October 30, 2026 12:08 am IST
