Al Jazeera Celebrates 30 Years Amid Major Service Restructuring

Doha, Qatar – Al Jazeera celebrated its 30th anniversary on Sunday with a commemorative event at its headquarters. The event was attended by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and other delegates. Al Jazeera’s Director General, Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani, said the network was “not just a screen” but a promise that journalism can be free and responsible, and that “opinion and the other opinion” is a position, not a slogan. Raed Fakih, Director of News, noted that for three decades the network has transformed how news is covered in the Arab world, giving voice to perspectives that had been marginalized. He added that the anniversary is an opportunity to broaden coverage and give greater prominence to a wider range of events and viewpoints.

The anniversary coincides with a significant restructuring of Al Jazeera Media Network’s Arabic‑language news services. The network is separating rolling breaking‑news coverage, live event broadcasting, and more in-depth reporting across three channels.

Al Jazeera launched on 1 November 1996 as an Arabic‑language satellite news channel from Doha, becoming the first independent channel in the Arab world. Since then it has expanded into a media network that includes television channels, websites and other digital platforms, and operates in multiple languages. The network has faced bans, attacks and bombings of its offices in various countries. It has been the only foreign broadcaster in Kabul during the 2001 U.S. attack on Afghanistan, and its coverage of the 2011 Arab Spring earned a Peabody Award.

Journalists for Al Jazeera have been killed in the line of duty: a U.S. strike on its Baghdad office in 2003 killed correspondent Tareq Ayyoub; in 2022 an Israeli soldier shot Palestinian correspondent Shireen Abu Akhle in Jenin, the 12th Al Jazeera journalist killed in 19 years; and in August 2025 an Israeli strike killed Anas al‑Sharif and four colleagues outside al‑Shifa Hospital. Sheikh Nasser paid tribute to these martyrs, stating they are part of Al Jazeera’s promise.

Governments have also closed the network’s bureaus and revoked licences. In 2024 Israel banned the network and raided its Ramallah office, and months later the Palestinian Authority suspended it. At least nine governments have attempted to silence Al Jazeera.

Despite these challenges, Al Jazeera operates with more than 3,000 staff in over 70 bureaus worldwide. Its English channel, launched in 2006, reaches more than 430 million homes. On Sunday the network also launched The Core, an artificial intelligence initiative announced in December 2025 in partnership with Google Cloud, aimed at integrating AI into newsroom operations to help journalists manage information, coordinate coverage and utilize the network’s archives. Al Jazeera Balkans was relaunched in a new digital‑first format, marking a new chapter for the network in the region.

Al Jazeera continues to pursue its mission of giving a voice to the voiceless while collecting hundreds of awards for its journalism.
