25‑Year‑Old Lawyer‑Student Buys £170,000 Yorkshire Home After Living in Nepal for Half the Year

Madeleine Jaye, 25, has bought a £170,000 property in Yorkshire after spending much of her time in a small village near Pokhara, Nepal. The Nottingham‑born former law student finished a four‑year degree at Sheffield and had planned to join a major law firm. A trip to Nepal introduced her to Ram, whom she met during a momo cooking class. They married in May 2026 and now split their time between Britain and the Nepalese village, about 25 minutes from Pokhara.
In Nepal, the couple lives without hot water, a refrigerator or a washing machine, cooking over an open fire. Madeleine runs a personal‑assistant business in the UK, placing live‑in care workers for six‑to‑12‑week assignments that include accommodation. She alternates these placements with periods in Nepal, allowing her to earn in Britain while keeping her monthly expenses in Nepal at around £300.
The lower cost of living has helped her save enough to purchase the Yorkshire home. Living in the village has required adjustments, such as keeping goats and chickens indoors at night because of tigers, and coping with monsoon weather. Madeleine says the experience has brought her contentment and a sense of spirituality she had not expected.
Her decision to step away from a conventional legal career was influenced by the death of her father from cancer at 54, which made her rethink the value of time over traditional success. She remains open to returning to law in the future, but for now balances work in Britain with life in Nepal. Her mother, who attended the couple’s Hindu wedding, supports her choices.
