West Bengal to Launch School of Magic and Museum, Advisory Committee Formed

The West Bengal government plans to establish a school for learning magic and a museum to display the history of magic, officials said. A senior state government official confirmed that an advisory committee for the proposed West Bengal School of Magic, Illusion and Performing Arts has already been formed and held its first meeting in Kolkata on Friday. The government statement said the school would be set up by the state information and cultural affairs department, and a museum on the history of magic in Bengal would be established concurrently. The committee’s chief advisor is renowned magician PC Sorcar (Jr). Other magicians are expected to join the committee. Sorcar had been fielded by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Barasat Lok Sabha seat in the 2014 Parliamentary elections, where he lost to All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) candidate Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. In February of that year, Sorcar’s appearance at a BJP rally addressed by Narendra Modi, then not Prime Minister, surprised many Left supporters, as he had previously been close to the Left Front government.
