IIM Calcutta MBA Leaves McKinsey for Google, Shares Why
By Sneha Biswas

Jahnvi Singh, an MBA graduate from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, recently went viral on social media after announcing her decision to leave McKinsey & Company and join Google. In a video posted on Instagram, Singh explained the factors that led to her move and compared her experiences at the two firms.
Singh began her career as a consultant at McKinsey, describing the role as a “dream job” that offered exposure to multiple clients and a variety of industries. She noted that the consulting work required frequent domestic travel to cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi.
At Google, Singh now works with the Gurugram team on a single business line, allowing her to develop deeper expertise in one industry. She said the trade‑off is that the work can feel more monotonous compared to the variety of projects at McKinsey.
Travel patterns also differ: while McKinsey involved regular domestic trips, Singh’s role at Google has reduced domestic travel but includes opportunities to travel internationally two to three times a year.
Regarding workplace benefits, Singh highlighted that McKinsey provided perks such as five‑star hotel stays, dinners and parties during assignments. In contrast, Google offers services like office pick‑up and drop‑off and a cafeteria with healthy food options.
The biggest change, according to Singh, is her life outside work. She now works out five times a week, walks 8,000 steps daily, and can plan social activities without needing permission.
Singh is also a social media content creator who frequently posts about her career, life and travel. She is a former McKinsey consultant and now a Google employee in Gurugram.
