Shoppers in New Zealand have been forced to abandon purchases after ASB customers reported widespread card payment failures. Around 8 pm, many customers posted on social media that they could not pay for food or fuel, and some reported problems with payment terminals. A Herald reader said about 20 customers at Costco in Auckland’s Westgate had to leave after experiencing payment difficulties. One user posted to Facebook, “Dear ASB Bank. Please sort yourselves lol. Systems crashed and now people are leaving their groceries behind at the supermarket.” McDonald’s drive‑thrus in Auckland were also reported to be backed up amid the disruption, with one person describing the situation as “super embarrassing.” ASB confirmed on Facebook that it was experiencing an issue affecting its EFTPOS, Visa debit and credit cards, with some transactions being declined. Its ATMs were also affected. The bank said, “Our tech team is working on this urgently and we’ll keep you updated. We thank customers for their patience, and apologise for the inconvenience caused.” The Herald has contacted ASB for comment. More to come.
