U.S. Designates Helium as Critical Material to Bolster Domestic Supply
By Reuters

On Friday, October 23, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy announced that Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has designated helium as a critical material under the Energy Act of 2020. The move is intended to strengthen American manufacturing and supply‑chain security. The department said the designation follows the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign critical minerals, support domestic manufacturing, and secure key materials for economic and national security. Helium was found to meet the statutory definition of a critical material because of its essential role in American manufacturing and its growing exposure to supply‑chain risks. The agency noted that helium’s unique properties make it indispensable for semiconductor manufacturing, with no viable substitutes for many critical applications. It also highlighted that the United States has substantial domestic helium‑rich natural gas resources that could help meet rising industrial demand. However, the department added that limited refining capacity and lengthy permitting timelines continue to constrain U.S. production. Published – October 24, 2026 02:55 am IST
