Jhansi Student Builds ₹1,800 Air Conditioner That Lowers Room Temperature by 5°C
By Sneha Biswas

In a region where summer heat makes life difficult, a 16‑year‑old student from Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, has created a low‑cost air conditioner. Kalyani Shrivastava, then a Class 12 student at Lokamanya Tilak Inter College, built the device for just ₹1,800. The invention uses a thermocol icebox and a 12‑volt DC fan, allowing air to pass through a cooling chamber before exiting through an elbow‑shaped outlet. After an hour, the unit can reduce room temperature by about 4‑5 °C. It is solar‑powered, so it can run without electricity. The simple construction and low cost attracted attention, and the device was selected for a national‑level model competition associated with IIT Delhi. Harsh Goenka, chairman of RPG Enterprises, praised the invention on X, calling it an eco‑friendly air conditioner and the cheapest in the world. The project was aimed at providing affordable cooling for families in Bundelkhand who cannot afford conventional air conditioners.
