Hundreds of Ethiopians, mainly women and children, crossed into Kenya from the border town of Moyale after fighting erupted there. Kenyan police reported that the refugees entered through several points in Moyale, including the Sessi, Kore, Biashara, Foundation and Miti areas. The clashes were triggered by a dispute over the display of the flag of the Somali Regional State, a majority‑Somali region in eastern Ethiopia, and escalated into gunfire between forces from Ethiopia’s Oromia and Somali regional governments. Kenyan police described chaotic scenes and gunfire in Moyale. The Kenya Red Cross has set up temporary shelters and is distributing essential items such as cereal and porridge flour, with an initial response aimed at 1,000 households. Experts are assessing the number of affected people and their needs. The incident occurs far from the larger conflict in northern Tigray between government forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
