On Thursday, October 8, 2026, the Supreme Court issued an interim order directing that the Udayasthamana Pooja on Ekadasi day be conducted according to the historic practice of the Guruvayoor Sri Krishna Temple in Kerala. A bench presided over by Justice Aravind Kumar emphasized that the faith and sentiments of worshippers should take precedence over administrative concerns. The petitioners, led by P.C. Hary and members of traditional managing families, were represented by senior advocate Guru Krishnakumar and advocate Karthik Ashok. They challenged decisions by the Guruvayoor Devaswom Managing Committee and the temple Thantri to alter or reschedule the Udayasthamana Pooja on Vrishchikam Ekadasi. Management, represented by senior advocates C.A. Sundaram, V. Giri and advocate Rohini Musa, argued that logistical challenges posed by the large influx of devotees on that auspicious day made the performance of the rituals difficult. Justice Kumar noted, “I have myself stood for seven hours,” indicating that the extended vigil is part of the devotional expression. The court will hear the main appeal in December.
