A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s (1931–2015), birthday is celebrated on October 15 as World Students’ Day, honoring his immense contributions to education and his role as a teacher and mentor to young people. Born in 1931 in Rameswaram, India, Kalam is remembered as the “Missile Man of India” for his work in developing India’s missile and space technologies. He later became the 11th President of India, serving from 2002 to 2007, and earned widespread love as the “People’s President.”

World Students’ Day was established in 2010 to recognize his dedication to students and education. Despite facing hardships during his early life, Kalam’s remarkable achievements are an inspiration to many. Educational institutions across India mark this day as a tribute to his vision of empowering youth through education and innovation.

Kalam’s life and teachings continue to inspire generations, and his legacy is celebrated with various events, including lectures, discussions, and motivational sessions in schools and colleges on this day​

Kalam worked at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He was pivotal in India’s civilian space program and military missile development. Notably, he was the project director of India’s first satellite launch vehicle, SLV-III, which successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in 1980. His leadership was also instrumental in the development of the Agni and Prithvi ballistic missiles, earning him his nickname.

One of his most significant achievements was his involvement in India’s nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998, which established India as a nuclear power.

Beyond his scientific career, Kalam was admired for his humility, simple lifestyle, and deep commitment to education. His book, “Wings of Fire”, an autobiography, remains an inspiration to millions. He was deeply passionate about mentoring young minds, and even after his presidency, he continued to inspire the youth of India, visiting schools and universities across the country.
