Pakistan has reportedly deployed Chinese-made SH-15 howitzers along its border with India, in what is being described as one of its biggest artillery repositioning moves in recent years. According to intelligence-based reports cited in the media, the truck-mounted 155mm self-propelled artillery systems are being placed across strategic sectors along the eastern frontier, stretching from north to south.
The deployment has drawn attention because of the scale involved. Reports say Pakistan has positioned around 250 SH-15 systems near the Indian border, strengthening its long-range firepower and mobility along sensitive stretches. The move comes amid already strained relations between the two neighbours and is being viewed as a significant step in Pakistan’s artillery modernization.
The SH-15 is an export version of China’s PCL-181 artillery system, developed by state-owned defence firm NORINCO. Built on a truck-mounted platform, the system is designed for quick movement, rapid deployment and fast firing capability. With a range reported to be up to 72 km under certain conditions, it gives the Pakistan Army greater reach than older artillery platforms.
The system uses a 155mm/52-calibre gun, which allows it to fire a variety of shells, including extended-range rounds. Its mobility is considered one of its biggest strengths, as the truck-mounted design makes it easier to reposition quickly and operate across different terrain. In modern battlefield terms, that combination of range and movement is often seen as a major tactical advantage.
The reported deployment has also been linked to broader military developments in the region. Pakistani forces are said to have started placing the howitzers in key sectors across the border, which has raised concern in Indian security circles. The size and timing of the deployment have added to the perception that Pakistan is preparing for a more assertive artillery posture.
Defence watchers say the SH-15 induction reflects the deepening military cooperation between Pakistan and China. The artillery system is part of a wider pattern of Chinese-origin defence equipment entering Pakistan’s arsenal, especially in response to India’s own modernization of land-based firepower. That ongoing competition has contributed to an increasingly weaponized border environment.
While the deployment has not been confirmed through official public statements in the report, the intelligence-based claims have already fueled discussion about the strategic balance along the frontier. For now, the focus remains on the system’s reach, mobility and the message its deployment sends in a tense regional setting.
