Dev Anand’s Son Suneil Anand Dies at 70 in the United Kingdom

Actor and filmmaker Suneil Anand, the son of legendary Hindi-cinema personalities Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik, has died in the United Kingdom at the age of 70, bringing another moment of grief to one of Indian cinema’s most respected filmmaking families. His death was confirmed through a statement issued by his niece Gina Narang on behalf of the family, which expressed gratitude for the messages, prayers and support received while requesting privacy during the period of mourning. According to media reports, Suneil suffered a heart attack in London while travelling from the United States to India with a stopover in the UK. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors reportedly planned a stent procedure following an initial medical assessment, but he experienced another heart attack before the intervention could be carried out and could not be revived despite efforts by the medical team. Reports also noted the poignant coincidence that he died at the same London hospital where his father, Dev Anand, had passed away in 2011. Born on June 30, 1956, in Zurich, Switzerland, Suneil grew up surrounded by cinema but initially pursued his education abroad, earning a degree in Business Administration from American University in Washington, DC, before following his family into filmmaking. He made his acting debut in the 1984 film Anand Aur Anand, directed by and co-starring his father, and subsequently appeared in productions including Car Thief in 1986, Main Tere Liye in 1988 and Master in 2001. Although he did not achieve the extraordinary stardom associated with Dev Anand, Suneil remained committed to cinema as an actor, producer and director. Master, which he also directed, reflected his interest in martial arts, for which he had reportedly trained in Hong Kong. His contribution to the Anand family’s film heritage extended far beyond acting. For decades, he helped manage his father’s professional schedule, personal well-being and the operations of Navketan Films, the influential production company established by Dev Anand and Chetan Anand in 1949. He also said he was involved in presenting a restored version of Dev Anand’s celebrated film Guide at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, an occasion he regarded as a major milestone for his father, the family banner and Indian cinema. After Dev Anand’s death, Suneil continued to safeguard the family’s cinematic legacy and had discussed plans to produce and direct an international film dedicated to his father, featuring overseas performers and archival footage of the evergreen star.
