BSNL has launched a new satellite phone service in India aimed at people who need communication access in places where regular mobile networks do not work. Unlike normal smartphones that depend on mobile towers, the BSNL satellite phone connects directly to satellites orbiting the Earth, allowing users to make voice calls even from remote regions, disaster-hit zones, maritime areas, mining sites, defence locations and adventure travel routes. The device is priced at ₹1,34,166 including taxes and is designed for challenging environments where mobile signals may be weak, unavailable or completely disrupted. BSNL says the phone is suitable for defence personnel, disaster response teams, maritime operations, remote field workers, pilgrims and adventure travellers who may need reliable emergency communication. One of the key features is an SOS emergency option, which can be useful during natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes or landslides, when mobile towers and regular networks may stop functioning. The phone also comes with a rugged design and long-lasting battery, making it more practical for outdoor and critical-use situations. BSNL has developed the service in partnership with Inmarsat, a global satellite communications company whose satellite network helps provide coverage across large remote areas. However, this is not a regular consumer phone that anyone can simply buy and use like a smartphone. Satellite phones are strictly regulated in India for security reasons, and users need permission from the Department of Telecommunications before purchasing or operating one. BSNL has also listed government and commercial plans, with separate monthly and annual options, along with additional per-minute and SMS charges once free usage limits are exhausted. With this launch, BSNL is positioning the satellite phone as a specialised communication tool for emergencies, remote work and critical operations rather than a mass-market mobile device.
