Date:

Eight newly elected Members of Parliament took oath as Rajya Sabha members on June 29, 2026, marking a fresh round of representation in the Upper House of Parliament. Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath to the new members, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and BJP leader Tarun Chugh. Kharge, who was re-elected from Karnataka, took oath separately in the Chairman’s chamber while holding a copy of the Constitution, with Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra present during the ceremony. The seven other members took oath in the Rajya Sabha chamber, including Jitendra Meghjibhai Kanzariya and Mansingh Meraman Parmar from Gujarat, M. Nagaraja from Karnataka, Rajendra Hiralal Jain from Maharashtra, Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi from Manipur and Alka Singh from Rajasthan, along with Tarun Chugh. Senior leaders including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Leader of the House J. P. Nadda, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal were also present during the oath-taking. After the ceremony, Kharge was reappointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, continuing his role as the Congress’s key voice in the Upper House. The oath-taking comes at a politically important time, as the composition of the Rajya Sabha continues to shape debates, legislative strategy and the balance between the ruling alliance and the opposition. With the new members now formally sworn in, the Upper House is expected to see renewed participation across party lines as Parliament prepares for upcoming legislative business.
