From Aishwarya to Om Shanti Om: How Deepika Padukone’s First Film Opened the Door to Bollywood Stardom

Date:

Deepika Padukone’s Bollywood debut in Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan is often remembered as one of Hindi cinema’s most glamorous launch moments, but her journey to that breakthrough had already begun a year earlier with the Kannada film Aishwarya. Before becoming Shantipriya in Farah Khan’s 2007 blockbuster, Deepika had impressed filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh, who cast her in his 2006 romantic drama after noticing her striking screen presence, discipline and confidence. Lankesh recalled that Deepika had already transformed from a promising badminton player into a successful model, and her height, personality, expressive eyes and pan-Indian appeal made her fit perfectly into the world he wanted to create for Aishwarya. The film, co-starring Upendra, became a success in Karnataka and reportedly completed a 50-day theatrical run, giving Deepika early visibility before her Hindi debut. Her then-manager Pooja Dadlani, who later became closely associated with Shah Rukh Khan’s team, also played an important role in supporting Deepika’s early career moves. The success of Aishwarya soon reached wider industry circles, and when Shah Rukh Khan was asked about the film during a Bengaluru visit, he humorously remarked that since it had become a hit, he would now have to pay Deepika more. Ironically, reports later claimed that Deepika did not charge any fee for Om Shanti Om, as she considered the chance to debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan a reward in itself. The gamble worked beautifully, as Om Shanti Om turned her into a national sensation and introduced her to audiences as both the graceful Shantipriya and the lively Sandy. Looking back, Lankesh has described Deepika’s rise as a case study in focus, star quality and smart career choices, saying he sensed from the beginning that she was not just an actor but a star. From Aishwarya to Om Shanti Om, and later to films like Cocktail, Chennai Express, Piku, Padmaavat, Pathaan, Jawan and Kalki 2898 AD, Deepika’s journey shows how one regional debut, one powerful Bollywood launch and years of disciplined choices shaped her into one of India’s biggest female stars.
