UAE Looks at India’s BrahMos and Akashteer as Gulf Defence Priorities Shift

Date:

The United Arab Emirates is reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and Akashteer air-defence system, a move that could mark a major step forward in India-UAE defence cooperation and strengthen India’s position as an emerging global defence exporter. The reported interest comes at a time when Gulf countries are reassessing their security needs amid rising regional tensions, drone threats, missile risks and the growing importance of protecting critical infrastructure, ports, energy facilities and airspace. For the UAE, BrahMos represents a powerful strike capability, while Akashteer offers a modern air-defence command-and-control layer designed to improve coordination and response against aerial threats. Together, the two systems reflect a “strike and shield” approach, combining deterrence with stronger defensive preparedness. The development is also significant for India, which has been working to expand its defence exports beyond traditional buyers and position indigenous military platforms as credible options for friendly nations. BrahMos has already become one of India’s most recognised defence exports, while Akashteer is now drawing attention as a home-grown defensive technology with potential international demand. If discussions move forward, the possible deal could deepen strategic trust between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi, support India’s defence manufacturing ambitions and give the UAE another procurement option beyond its traditional Western suppliers. While no final agreement has been officially confirmed, the reported talks show how India’s defence industry is increasingly being viewed as a serious player in global security markets. For the Gulf region, where air defence, maritime security and rapid response capabilities remain high priorities, India’s BrahMos and Akashteer systems could become part of a broader shift toward diversified defence partnerships and stronger regional preparedness.
