Norway Rejects Double Standards Charge on Russia, US and Israel Law Violations

Date:

Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has defended his country’s foreign policy approach, saying Oslo does not follow “double standards” when responding to violations of international law by powerful nations, including Russia, the United States and Israel. Speaking amid global debates over Ukraine, Gaza and Western credibility, Eide said Norway has consistently criticised Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Israeli actions in Gaza and other alleged breaches of international law, regardless of the country involved. His remarks come at a time when many Global South nations have accused Western governments of strongly condemning Russia while appearing softer on Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Norway, however, has argued that respect for international law must apply equally to allies and adversaries, warning that selective outrage weakens the global rules-based order. Eide also said Norway hopes India can use its long-standing communication channels with Russia to support efforts toward a ceasefire in Ukraine. The comments highlight Norway’s attempt to position itself as a principled diplomatic voice while balancing relations with major powers, humanitarian concerns and growing international pressure over conflicts in Europe and West Asia.
